Bringing a new cat home

In December, we saw a wonderful affectionate 8-week old kitten in a vet's clinic. The poor little thing was abandoned at birth and was found with fleas and had a bad bout of kitty flu. The vet nurses at the practice hand raised the little one. As my husband works in the pet care industry, he found out about this little guy.

After a long discussion and putting the pros and cons on the table, we decided to bring him home. We gave him the name, Khromie. According to the vet, Khromie is likely a ragdoll cross. He sure did have that super affectionate, ragdoll personality.

Day 0
We went to get some high quality kitten food. My husband strongly insisted a "super premium" grade of cat food. The lines which carry the "super premium" grade are Advance, Hill Science Diet, Royal Canin, Eukabana, etc. "Super premium" food is filler free and have the right blend of nutrients for a cat. It's quite noticeable that kitty's poo is less smelly too! We normally visit our local Petbarn store to help us get all our pet needs. We normally buy in 8-12 kg bulks.

Day 1
We brought Khromie home in the evening. We have a  big 3 story cage at home. Khromie spent most of that evening and night in that cat. This allowed for Khromie to start exploring the different smells around the home and get acquainted to our other 3 cats, Bones (5.5 year old Black/white DSH), Snowy (5.5 year old DMH white and torti tail) and Rocky (4.5 year old tabby and white DSH).

Day 2 - 3
Time to explore! Under the watchful eyes of my husband, Khromie was let out of the cage. We were really worried on what's going to happen! The little 1.7kg kitten first met with the big daddy of our kitty world - Bones (8 kg). Bones took him under his wing and started cleaning him. Khromie snugged up against Bones too.

Snowy (5kg female) was not all about him, there was alot of hisses from her and there were a few smacks too! Unfortunately as Khromie was hand-reared (instead of being brought up by his mummy cat), he didn't understand hissing as aggression. The fearless kitten ended up with a small scratch on his nose.

Rocky (5.5kg male) was terrified! Poor Rocky who is normally really shy towards anyone (anything) new hid under the bed for the next 2 days. He really didn't like the how the ragdoll cross was excessively affectionate.

The kitten was put into the cage every few hours to rest (and to give the other cats a break) and over night.

Day 4
Things started settling. Snowy figured the kitten was not all too terrifying after all. However, Rocky and Khromie don't get along especially when the kitten who constantly want to give affection in terms of head-to-head rubs. Rocky wasn't all bout that kind of affection.

The kitten spent his first night not in the cage too. He spent it under our bed. I guess he felt more secure there.

The kitten has brought new life to our family. Especially to our older cat Bones, who was depressed and was needing anti-depressants. We nickname him "therapy cat".
