How to clean your hair brush

Ever had your hairbrush looking eeky with white fluffy stuff and little bits of hair you just can't remove?

I've had the real frustration trying to find ways to clean my hair brushes. I've washed it with all sorts of soaps, detergent and shampoo, soaked it, tried running a pin or pencil through it. I've tried using a scissors to cut off the tangles and even have tried rubbing the bristles of 2 brushes or combs together. But alas, the hairbrush still looks fuzzy. I do admit, I have tossed away a few brushes because I couldn't stand how unhygienic it looked after a month of using it.

The chemical engineer in me decided I'm not going to read anymore hacks on cleaning online and find a proper scientific solution. This hack is ridiculously easy and cheap as well! So here's how:

What you'll need is a tall glass which you can dip all the bristles of your brush in, some caustic soda drain cleaner and water.

Step 1
Add 1 tablespoon of caustic soda in the glass.

Step 2
Place the brush into the glass bristle end in and top up with water so that the bristles are covered. Jiggle the brush a little to help dissolve the caustic soda.

Step 3
Leave the brush in the water for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Step 4
Its best to wear a pair of kitchen gloves and googles for step 4 and 5.
Remove the brush from the water and run it under a tap for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. This will reduce the concentration of the caustic soda.

Step 5
Hold the brush with bristles facing down. Wack the brush down (bristles facing down) on a hard surface (e.g. kitchen counter or floor) a number of times. You will find the fuzzy stuff coming out at this stage. Gently use your fingers to help remove all the fuzz. You might need to repeat this step a few times till all the fuzz is removed.

Step 6
Give the brush a final rinse under a running tap and let it air dry after.

And there you have it! A nice clean brush.

WARNING
A word of warning. Do heed the warnings on your bottle of caustic soda. Caustic soda is Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH). This is a strong alkaline. It can cause corrosion and irritation of skin and eyes. This is also how it works on removing all the "fluff" in your brush. Be very careful when using it. This is NOT for kids and is best not to have kids or pets in the area while you are attempting this hack.
