Sydney - How to get to the Cruise Terminal Port

The Australian cruise industry is fast expanding with over 1 million passengers a year boarding a cruise ship. Major players include P&O, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Carnival. Sydney is home to most of the Australian based fleet.

Pacific Pearl docked at Ocean Passenger Terminal, Circular Quay
Sydney has 2 cruise terminals. There is the Ocean Passenger Terminal located in Circular Quay, and there is the White Bay Cruise Terminal in Rozelle. You should check with your cruise company where port you will be embarking on, as the two terminals are not close to each other.

I've has many people ask about how to get to both terminals numerous times on Cruise Critic and on Facebook. Here's how to get there.

No Long-Term Parking
There is no long-term parking at either terminals, so driving and leaving your car there is NOT and option.

Uber
Uber does not pick up from airports in Sydney. It's illegal to.

Ocean Passenger Terminal
The Ocean Passenger Terminal is located in Circular Quay. Circular Quay is one of Sydney's main public transport hubs accessible by Train, Bus and Ferry. The public transport area is about 500 metres (0.3 miles), or 6 minutes walk away from the Ocean Passenger Terminal.

Airport
If you are coming or going to the Airport, the most reliable method of travel is by Train, on the Airport line. The fare is approximately A$18 for adults and A$14 for children. This is most reliable as Circular Quay is within Sydney CBD and traffic can get slow and chaotic. Travel time is 20 minutes to the International Airport or 18 minutes to the Domestic Airport.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi there. It will cost between $35 to $60 depending on the traffic. It will take you about 30 minutes in favourable traffic conditions, or up to 1 hour in poor traffic conditions.

Sydney CBD
Sydney CBD ranges from Central all the way up to Circular Quay. If you are coming from the Airport and staying in Sydney CBD, likewise, the train is the best option; taxi is second best. Alternatively, if you are staying at a decent hotel, you might be able to ask if your hotel provides you with a hotel transfer service.

To get to the Ocean Passenger Terminal from Sydney CBD, there are 2 options, by public bus or by train. If you are catching a train, you will need to alight at Circular Quay station. If you are getting on a public bus, remember to buy a ticket before you get on the bus, as ticketing is pre-paid in the CBD. Bus tickets can be bought at news agents or convenience shops. You can use google to check the bus route numbers from your hotel. My personal preference is the train if your hotel is not too far from a station. If you have too much luggage, take a taxi.

White Bay Cruise Terminal
White Bay Cruise Terminal is located in Rozelle, in Sydney's inner west. White Bay Cruise Terminal, unlike the Ocean Passenger Terminal does not have public transport near by. The best way to get there from the airport or Sydney CBD is by taxi.

For the troopers, here's how to get White Bay Cruise Terminal by public transport. Warning, if you have lots of luggage, I would strongly discourage you to take this route. From Sydney Airport, catch a train to Town Hall station. Walk to the Queen Victoria Building (QVB), York Street and look for Bus Stand B. Catch bus 442 towards Balmain East for 2 stops. Alight at Mullens Street after Mansfield Street. Walk 1.6 km (or 1 mile) to White Bay Cruise Terminal. Remember to buy a ticket before you get on the bus as ticketing in the CBD is pre-paid.

Extra tips
1. Avoid booking flights anytime before 12 noon on day of disembarkation. Sydney traffic can be pretty chaotic.

2. Plan to stay a night in Sydney before getting on your cruise, it's well worth feeling relaxed getting to your cruise.

3. If you are catching an international flight in, be careful of Australia's very strict quarantine laws. There are things which we often forget to declare - food (including snacks and baby food), soil on shoes, wood stuff. If you aren't sure, better to declare it, they would then decide if they would let you bring it in. If you don't declare it, you might have to pay a few hundred dollar fine.

4. Check with your cruise on your embarkation time. Some cruise liners are stricter than others, you won't want sitting at the terminal waiting to board and watching other board before you!

Have fun in Sydney!
