Sushi Rio, Sussex Street, Sydney

Sushi Rio is a Japanese sushi train restaurant in Sydney CBD. It is located on Sussex Street, Sydney. The restaurant is pretty busy and it is common to have to wait for a table, as you can't reserve a table here. Sushi Rio is one of the very many sushi restaurants in Sydney CBD and has been there a good number of years.

Seating is like any other typical Japanese sushi train - bar style. But there are also a few tables away from the bar for small groups. This really isn't a good place for a groups of more than 6 people as it would be very hard to find seating in this restaurant.

Food and Drinks

Sushi

From top left corner (clockwise): Beef tataki nigiri, Chicken katsu with avocado roll, Salmon nigiri, Seared prawn nigiri, Mackerel sushi, Seared salmon nigiri, Mackerel nigiri, Yellow tail nigiri.

All sushi were well made - nothing was falling apart. Every piece was well seasoned and there was no need for any extra soy sauce or wasabi either. All slices of fish were fresh and sliced well. There was slices of ginger provided to cleanse your palate after each piece.

My favourites were the beef tataki nigiri and the mackerel sushi. The beef was very fresh and the coat of soy sauce on it was well blended. What made the mackerel sushi special was the bit of fresh minced ginger in the rice, giving the sushi a nice tangy flavour.

Hot food and drinks

From the top left corner (clockwise): Nabeyaki udon, Karaage chicken, Fried gyoza, Rio mocktail, Agedashi tofu, Chawanmushi

Nabeyaki udon - Udon in a hot pot with a hot broth with tofu, Chinese cabbage, slices of beef, fish cake and a raw egg. Udon and broth were good.

Karaage chicken - 3 pieces of deep fried chicken served piping hot! Very juicy chicken, but 1 small piece for $1 can be very expensive.

Fried gyoza - Deep fried gyoza with a pork and vegetable filling. Fried gyoza is still best pan-fried rather than deep fried. A little disappointing, but the filling was decent.

Agedashi tofu - Deep fried tofu in a soy-based dipping sauce. Excellent.

Chawanmushi - Steamed egg custard with mushroom and chicken. Smooth and silky, yummy.

Price
All sushi on the train is priced at $3, and sashimi is $6.50. There is also a range of small hot dishes for $3 - this includes the Kaarage chicken and Fried gyoza. Most desserts are $3 as well. Most large hot dishes are between $5 and $10. And there is a good variety of mocktails for $5.50.

Overall
Good sushi restaurant with a decent selection, and good price. Overall, there was nothing spectacularly good, but there wasn't anything terrible either. After 8 visits over 6 years, what I can say, is that the restaurant serves consistently good sushi at a decent price. Will visit again when I crave sushi.
