Top 10 Google Searches 2017 - How does Australia Compare?

Google recently released its "Year in Search 2017" where the list of top Google searches across the world was announced. How does top searches in Australia compare to the rest of the world? Let's find out!

Top 10 Google Searches in 2017

Sports

You can't deny that Australians are sports crazy. Indeed, the top 3 searches in the year are all about sports - Australia Open 2017, Melbourne Cup 2017 and Wimbledon 2017. Interestingly, the only sporting search which made it to the top 10 world wide list was the India National Cricket Team. And it is as interesting to note that the India National Cricket Team did not make it to top 10 searches in India! Other sports type searches which made the top 10 include the Super Bowl in the US and SEA (South East Asian) Games in Singapore.

Items

New or trendy items were a big feature of the Australian top 10 searches list. The highly popular fidget spinner came in at number 4. The much awaited iPhone 8 and iPhone X came in at number 6 and 9 respectively.

The two new iPhone models came in at number 2 and 3 world wide, and featured on most countries' top 10 list. Ironically, these phones which were designed in the US did not make it onto the US top 10 Google search list.

The fidget spinner which made it onto the top 10 world wide list, and is also listed on many western countries such as Australia, UK, US and Canada. However, it did not make it onto the the list of Asian countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan.

Disasters

No year is without its disasters, either natural or man-made. Australia faced Cyclone Debbie in March - April 2017. This cyclone came in at number 5 of the top 10 Google search list in Australia. However powerful Cyclone Debbie was, it was dwarfed by Hurricane Imra, which was the top Google search in the world. Hurricane Imra also made it into the top 10 list in the UK and US.

Other disasters which made it onto the top 10 national list include the Manchester Bombing and Grenfell Tower fire in the UK, and Las Vagas shooting and Hurricane Harvey in the US. Other notable disasters such as Typhoon Hato, the Mexican earthquake and flooding coupled with mudslides in South Asia did not make the list.

People

Within the top 10 Google searches in Australia, Chris Cornell came in at number 8. The famous singer unfortunately took his life in May 2017. Unfortunately, other top searches world wide included  other artistes who have died including singer-songwriter Chester Bennington and Tom Petty.

Coming in at world wide number 4 was Television Journalist Matt Lauer. The long standing NBC host was terminated by NBC in November 2017 after allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour with a subordinate.

On the brighter note, the royal wedding news of the year brought Meghan Markle to number 5 searched world wide and number 1 in the UK.

It is also interesting to note that no individual was within the top searched in Singapore or Hong Kong.

Shopping and Business

The newly launched Amazon Australia site came in at number 10 on the top 10 Google searches in Australia list. No other shopping site made it on the top 10 world wide list. However, Lazada Singapore and ezBuy came in at number 9 and 10 respectively in Singapore.

Other notable business type searches include the selling of Yixin IPO stocks in Hong Kong. This made it to number 10 on the Hong Kong list.

Big and Small Screen

No big or small screen shows made it to the top 10 list in Australia. However one small screen show, 13 Reasons Why, made it to number 6 on the world wide list. It is also highly interesting to note that 3 big screen shows made it to top 10 list in Singapore, namely Wonder Woman (number 4), Beauty and the Beast (number 5) and Justice League (number 8). The Hong Kong top 10 searched list was made up of 7 different small screen shows! The people in Hong Kong must love their TVs heaps!

Others

Other notable searches which made it to the top 10 list in Australia includes North Korea. With rising tensions in one's backyard, there are no surprises here. The first solar eclipse in US in 26 years made it to its top 10 list. In Singapore, the Pokemon Go fever was impressive and led to the Singapore Pokemon Go Map (Sgpokemap) attaining the title of the number 1 Google searched in Singapore.
