Studying in Australia - What to do when I get sick?

As an international student, it is a visa requirement to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). You can easily find one from different health insurance providers such as Bupa, Medibank Private, Allianz, etc. You are normally required to buy 1 year before you leave and renew it every year after. This renewal isn't really governed, but if you get into serious accident or illness, you would find yourself in very significant problems.

Minor illness or injuries
If you require medical assistance for a minor illness or injury, such as colds and flu, coughs, minor burns or sprains, you would need to see a General Practitioner (GP). They will often need you pay for your consultation upfront and claim a portion back from your OSHC provider.

Medicines
After you see your GP, they may write you a prescription (we call it script in short) for medicine. You will need to visit a pharmacy (or sometimes called chemist) to buy the medicine. Doctors don't sell medicine directly. You may be able to get a wide range of over the counter medicine (medicines which you don't need a script for) from a pharmacy as well. These includes cough mixtures, cold and flu tablets, tablets for diahorrea and vomiting, etc.

Serious illness or injuries
If you require emergency medical assistance, for example if you got badly injured in a road accident, or you are bleeding uncontrollably, or have chest pains, or have trouble breathing, or have intent to suicide, you should seek help from a hospital emergency department. If you are unable to get yourself there, or need help immediately, you may need to dial 000 for an ambulance.  If you are unsure if you need to go to an emergency department, you should contact your GP. Hospitals are able to provide the medicines you require when you are an inpatient or in the emergency department. Your hospital bill is normally calculated by hospital bed cost, plus doctor's fees. Without the insurance locals have (called Medicare), medical help in hospitals are very costly. However, your OSHC would be able to cover a significant amount of the cost, hence it is very important you pay your annual premiums.

Special Consideration
If you were too unwell to complete an assignment or test, you will need to apply for special consideration. You will need a medical certificate from your doctor or hospital when applying for one.
