Eden, Zetland
If you have lived in Zetland for sometime, you would probably have suffered with not having much choice of cafes in walking distance. Yes, I'm sure you can drive to places like Grounds of Alexandria - but we are really talking about a suburb really close to the city, where most of its population people work and hence chose not to own a car.
Once Eden popped up, it has drawn quite a bit of weekend crowd - thanks also to the growing population of the suburb. However, there is really mixed comments on Urbanspoon (currently 63% - 10/8/2014). We decided to check it our for ourselves. We gave the cafe it's best chance by going on a weekday at brunch time when the cafe was not so busy.
Eden is themed using concepts from the biblical "Garden of Eden" (Adam, Eve, Garden and Snake). The decor is leaning on the industrial look, but trying to blend the "Garden" look with industrial is really challenging. Graffiti art was used on the walls, but it really seemed like amateur effort. Ignoring the decor, the place is spacious and there was no lack of seating options. There are bar stools on high tables, normal cafe style tables, comfy cushions and coffee tables, and the standard outdoor cafe seating.
Continuing on the "Garden of Eden" theme, Coffee is named "Adam's Brew" and "Eve's Blend". We ordered a mocha and a flat white. Both cups of coffee was good - nice blend, not burnt. Some effort was made into the coffee art.
Water was served in a large brown bottle - which reminded me of a bottle of chemical from a laboratory. Problem with the bottle is that it is really difficult to pour water out without spilling when you are pouring water out when seated. (I remember that this was always a 2 hand effort when using one of these bottles in the laboratory back in my uni days.)
We went for the simple bacon and egg combo on a roll. There were 3 eggs and 3 slices of bacon and a side of fries. The roll was nice an crisp. Egg was fried sunny side with the yolk still runny. Bacon wasn't over cooked. The tomato relish was nicely flavored. Chips were hot, crispy and nicely salted. I guess it's a good thing that probably the simplest thing on the menu wasn't screwed up.
Price wise, it's towards the expensive side. But comparatively to what the suburb has, this is one of the better bacon and egg rolls around. We will see what happens when more shops open!
