Home Thai Restaurant, Sydney
Home Thai Restaurant is definitely NOT your everyday Thai take away. There's something with this place which take your everyday Thai dishes to an even yummier level!
Home is always bustling with non-stop business. During weekends, be ready to queue especially if you are after a bigger table, or arrive before 6pm to get a better chance.
We visited Home Thai on a Sunday lunch. They do have a different lunch and dinner menu. If you are after curry, you'll need to come during dinner time. Lunch menu consist of the normal Thai fare such as Beef noodle soup, to the much loved Pad Thai and Stir fry chicken in cashew nuts with rice.
First the drinks. We had a Thai iced lemon tea and a Thai milk tea. The iced lemon tea was had a rich citrus flavour - they sure did not hold back on the lemons here! It was also well balanced with enough sugar so that the tea wasn't too sour. The Thai milk tea was silky smooth with lots of condensed milk and the tea was very aromatic. The Thai iced lemon tea is definitely one not to miss.
Next came our food. First, the Slowly Cooked Beef Noodle Soup (Keuw Tiew Neu Nam Tok). This is rice noodles served in a very rich beef broth with beef, bean sprouts, kai lan (Chinese broccoli), pork blood jelly, celery, topped with pork crackling and fresh herbs. The stand out of this dish is the richness and complexity of the highly aromatic beef broth and the very juicy pieces of beef.
We also had the Chicken Stir fried with Chili and Rice (Kao Rad Pad Pik Sod). Do be warned, if you aren't after something really spicy, this dish isn't for you. This is a great chili dish! It literally burns your mouth and its sting gets stronger as time goes by - this is one where drinking water doesn't help. The chicken was very juicy and the vegetables fresh and crunchy.
And the last dish we had was a Beef Glass Noodle Pad Thai (Pad Thai Woon Sen). This is an interesting rendition of the everyday Pad Thai using Glass Noodle instead of Rice Noodles. The glass noodles give a very different texture as compared to rice noodles. The noodles were fried to perfection, and the beef was juicy. Do give this a try, you don't get this one everywhere.
Overall, this is a place with great food at very reasonable prices particularly for the quality. The soup noodles was $9.90, chili rice dish was $9.90 and the pad thai was $10.90.
Wait staff are very attentive and friendly. The environment on the other hand might not be the most ideal. The restaurant, when packed - which is most of the time, is very noisy and you won't be able to hear your dining companion most of the time. Also, the seating is very tight. During lunch and dinner peaks, what looks like a larger 2 person table would be used to seat 3 or 4.
This is definitely a place I'll come back again and again.
