Ottaman Turkish Cuisine, Newtown

Ottoman Turkish Cuisine is a fairly large Turkish restaurant on Enmore Road, Newtown. On one side of the restaurant is a typical Turkish takeaway section with all your regular favourites like Kebabs, Pides and dips. On the other side is a restaurant with quite a bit of seating.

Seating
The restaurant is decorated with typical Turkish items hanging on walls - plates, flags, etc. Tables are covered with colourful Turkish style table cloth. This restaurant is pretty spacious with 2 floors of seating. On one side of the restaurant, there is a very gaudy purple wall with a stage. On which there is a water feature, and a disco ball hanging over head.

Food
Mezze Dip Platter, served with Turkish Bread. Dips include: Avocado, Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Dill, Beetroot, Spinach, Cacik, Chilli. This is a great dish for people new to Turkish Cuisine and wanting to try an array of dips. The dips are fresh and go great with the warm Turkish Bread. My personal favourites are the Beetroot and the Cacik.

Mixed Mezze Platter. Platter includes Falafel, Ladies Fingers, Vine Leaf with Rice, Grilled Halloumi Cheese, with a Eggplant and Pumpkin salad. This is probably a let-down dish. The whole dish is literally dripping in oil. This is a platter for 2, with 2 of each item. However, the 2 pieces of each can be pretty different. For example, one Ladies Finger was coming apart, while the other was well wrapped; and one grilled Halloumi was grilled evenly on both sides, while the other was only grilled well on one side. The best part of the dish was the salad in the middle - full of flavour.

Traditional Turkish Tea. This is a strong, highly aromatic tea which is consumed black, with or without sugar. Loved it.

Rice Pudding. This dish was the best part of the whole dinner. The rice pudding had a rich velvety texture, and not too sweet either. Does make me want to learn  how to make this dish!

Service
The restaurant was fairly busy for dinner at 6pm with more than 10 tables already occupied. Service was very polite and staff tried to keep up with service. It did take us a while to get dessert, but it was generally still fine.

Overall
If it weren't for the dessert, I probably will not recommend this place to my friends and family as the main course was really oily and inconsistent. I will probably only return to buy takeaway dips or the rice pudding.
