Din Tai Fung, Sydney Westfield, Sydney
Din Tai Fung, Sydney Westfield is located on the 5th floor Food Court in Sydney Westfield. This shop is one of many in a very large gourmet food court. This is definitely one food court which finding a seat on a Sunday lunch time very challenging.
Din Tai Fung is a Taiwanese Dumpling Bar chain with branches in Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, USA, Malaysia China and Australia. This includes 6 branches in Sydney alone. We visited the Din Tai Fung Sydney Westfield - an express outlet in a food court.
Food
You can find most of the typical Din Tai Fung menu at this outlet. However most portion sizes for buns and dumplings are smaller (4 dumplings as compared to 8 dumplings) as the steamers they use are smaller - kind of make sense as a big steamer is hard to carry on a tray.
Braised Beef Noodle Soup - Handmade wheat noodles with slices of stewed beef in a rich and aromatic clear beef broth.
Steamed Pork Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao) - Handmade dumplings, made with nearly an exact science! Each dumpling is carefully weighed so that they are not more than a gram too heavy or too light, which would affect the end product. The skin of the dumpling is thin and the broth in each dumpling makes each dumpling a wonderful ball of juiciness.
Shrimp and Pork Wanton Soup - Handmade Wantons in a clear broth. Silky smooth, thin skin wantons filled with flavour!
Hot and Sour Soup with Shredded Pork - This is a mildly spicy, peppery and sour thick broth full of different textures. There is lots of tofu, black fungus, pork mince. mushrooms topped with shallots.
Overall
The food here is good, but compared to the same establishment at World Square, I would say World Square DTF has a better quality food. At a cost of not significantly more at World Square, you get table service and a much better ambience. There is a much better menu at World Square too. Also quite odd for a Chinese restaurant chain without being able to order in Chinese too!
Find a seat here can be pretty challenging, very often the food ends up cold when you manage to find a seat. So here's a tip if you are planning a trip here with someone else, have someone find a seat while the others buy the meal.
If your plan is a grab and go meal, this is a good alternative to the World Square establishment. But if you are going as a group or hanging with friends, I would say that World Square Din Tai Fung would be the better place.
