Red Elephant House, Surry Hills

Red Elephant House is a Thai Restaurant in Surry Hills. Feeling pretty brave, we took a risk and bought Groupon vouchers for dinner here despite mixed comments on Urbanspoon about this restaurant.

Setting and Decor
The restaurant is pretty small with just 5-6 tables. The tables are pretty small too. So it would be a very tight fit if you came here with a group of more than 4. However, the place is pretty cosy with its simple lines and rich warm oriental tones.

Menu
As we bought a Groupon voucher, there was a 5-course set menu with good options. The meal consists of 2 entrees, 2 mains and 1 dessert to be shared. It also had 2 drinks. Pretty worth it for $29!

Drinks
Coconut drink - Sweet coconut water with chunks of coconut flesh. Very refreshing!
Thai iced lemon tea - Citrusy drink with the rich aroma of sweet Thai black tea. Great thirst quencher!

Long Rolls - Super crispy deep fried rice paper rolls of rice vermicelli, shitake mushrooms, shredded carrots and chestnuts, served with sweet chili sauce and coriander. Delicious.

Mummy Prawns - Skewers of deep fried prawns wrapped up with potato noodles, served on a bed of salad. Wish I could get seconds!

Bush Fire Chook - Grilled marinated chicken with Yellow Rice, coconut and sweet chili sauce. This dish was the dish of the night. Very juicy and flavorsome grilled chicken drizzled with coconut cream and served on a bed of very aromatic yellow rice. Simple but delicious.

Pad Thai - Chicken Pad Thai served with plenty of raw bean sprouts and lemon. Very tasty stir fried rice vermicelli in tamarind sauce, with chicken, tofu and full of the crunch of peanuts and raw bean sprouts.

Black sticky rice pudding - Thick and sweet black sticky rice pudding, served with coconut cream and a black sesame cracker. I'm not normally a big fan of black sticky rice puddings, largely because of the texture and they are often too sweet. But this pudding is not excessively sweet and the rice is cooked just right. The black sesame cracker which is not normally served with this dessert, is quite an interesting combination.

Overall
The food here is fantastic, pretty unlike the comments on Urbanspoon. The food is very fresh. We didn't have any problems ordering. The service was very friendly and prompt. Will be back for more.
