Bourke Street Bakery, Surry Hills

Bourke Street bakery first started in its humble home in Surry Hills. In recent times, it seems to be popping up all over Sydney. We've returned to its humble beginnings in Surry Hills to see if all this expansion has have any impact of its first branch.

Bourke Street Bakery at Surry Hills is a very tiny corner bakery with its counter nearly right at its entrance. On most days, you will find a sizable queue outside its door. From almost a block away, you will be able to smell the great aroma of freshly baked cakes, breads and pies all intermingled.

There are 3 tiny cafe tables (each seating for at very most 3) inside and a few rustic tables and stools on the pavement outside.

Coffee

We had a mocha and a flat white. Both were excellently roasted and the milk was frothed perfectly. The flat white came with a decent coffe heart art.

Food
Pork and Fennel Roll - A roll of minced pork with a very generous mix of fennel seeds rolled up in a flaky pastry. This is definitely not your everyday sausage roll. This was so juicy and rich in flavour that I could give the tomato sauce a miss.

Beer, Beef & Bacon Pie with Cheesy Mash - When you hear beer something in food, for example Beer Battered Chips or Ham cooked in Beer, most of the time you hardly taste any beer. Not this one. Every mouthful had a strong punch of beer and a mix of beer, bacon, potato and cheese all melting in your mouth. Not to be missed.

Beef Brisket, Red Wine and Mushroom Pie - After you eat this pie, you won't want to eat another minced beef pie again! This is a pie full of hearty chunks of beef brisket and slices of mushroom swelling around a rich red wine sauce.

Ginger Burlee Tart -This is an interesting twist on creme brulee. The tart super creamy and velvety smooth, and is richly spiced with a ginger flavour. It's topped off with a crunchy burnt caramel and a generous sprinkle of pistachio.

Chocolate Tart - This is a very rich chocolate ganache tart. Silky and dark. Deceptively simple looking, but full of character.

Overall
The price of each item is definitely more expensive than your normal bakery. Pies are around $5 and so are tarts. Coffee is around the $3.50 average. However, you will get your dollars worth here with the excellent pies and pastry. Despite all the expansions this chain has made, it still serves wonderful food.
