Same Sex Marriage Legalised... Now what for Christians?

Christians today live in a world with non-Christian governments, working without God’s law as their moral basis. However, the bible teaches us that there is no authority which is not instituted by God and we should submit to them.
“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.” Romans 13:1-2 ESV
Today, ruler of our lands tell us it is okay to marry someone of the same sex. This seems to completely contradict to what the bible teaches. However, as Christians, we shouldn’t forget the bible tells us of a clear hierarchy of power and law.

We live under our rulers, who must rule under the higher power. This higher power is our God. This is NOT about church law, rather about God’s law. In God’s perfect law, he created a woman for a man. Heterosexual relationships alone constitute marriages.
“You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” Leviticus 18:22 ESV
God is pretty clear about what he accepts as appropriate marital relationships. In fact any fornications or sex outside marriage is not right. This includes any sex between a man and a woman outside marriage.
“But fornication and impurity of any kind, or greed, must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among saints.” Ephesians 5:3 NRSV
Historically, in 1650, under the influences of the Puritans, the English passed a law outlawing fornication. Years later, the law was abolished by the government. However, God’s law today still stands and will never change. Sex outside of marriage is not legal under God’s law.

As Christians, we should always hold God’s law above the law of man. Today, same sex marriage is being deemed lawful in many countries. But as Christians, we should always hold to God’s law above any other.
“And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:2 ESV
As Christians, we are called to love. We are called to love as Christ loved us. We are called to love all man – even those who sin. Of course, there isn’t a man who hasn’t sin. In fact, the only man who hasn’t sin, was the perfect man who sacrificed His life for us – Jesus. Hence, we must love our friends who are from the LGBT community. The most loving thing to do is to tell our friends about Jesus. It is God who changes the hearts and minds of sinners, and not man.

However, as Christians, we shouldn’t accept sin. We don’t accept sex outside marriage between a man and a woman, as this is against God’s law, even though it is perfectly legal to the eyes of our governments. Why should we accept same sex marriage, as it is against God’s law as well, despite it being legalised?

As Christians, we need to promote healthy Christian marriages with our clear gender-defined roles as a husband and wife, which is irreplaceable between a same sex couple. As Christians, we need to work hard in our marriages to show the world the perfection of God’s creation in our lives.

As Christians, we need to keep coming to God in prayer for our governments and our world who is hostile towards us. As Christians, we need to be always ready to be persecuted and acknowledge that persecution is a reality for us.
“Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.” John 15:20 ESV
Today our friends who promote the LGBT lifestyle rejoice. Today, we as Christians, we mourn the further departure of our governments, who are supposed to be God’s servants, from God’s law. But we will always remember the day of vindication, when God will make everything right again!

“For the Lord will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants.” Psalms 134:14 ESV
